Meet Duncan Smith

Born in England, I was a regular visitor to Scotland from a young age. My dad was from Dundee and insisted on a family pilgrimage north every summer. These visits varied in their location – sometimes out on the wild west coast, other times in the forested central highlands, but one thing that marked every trip was a search for certain intrinsically Scottish delicacies; smokies, clootie dumpling, selkirk bannock, haggis…. The list could get quite long, but it meant a trip to Scotland meant a search for interesting foods.


Fast-forward a few decades, and after learning my trade in restaurants and hotels around the world in the winters and having spent many summers cooking in lodges and estates around Scotland, I now call Scotland my home. I’m based out of Kingussie, near Aviemore, on the edge of the Cairngorms national park. When I get the chance to take a day off from the kitchen, I’ll generally be found on a bike or a hike, whatever the weather may throw at me!

Here on the website, you'll find a selection of sample menus for your reference. However, please keep in mind that I customise each menu to reflect your unique tastes. Instead of a fixed menu, I specialise in creating bespoke options tailored specifically for your group.

 

I have always thought that the first step to making a great meal is to use quality ingredients, and I am proud of the suppliers that I use. I have access to great seafood landing at Peterhead, delicious Scottish cheeses and dairy, plentiful fruits and vegetables through the summer months and of course wonderful game from the estates around the northern Cairngorms, which would all naturally feature  on a Scottish themed menu. Whether you are a comitted carnivore, a flexitarian or someone with vegan leanings, I pride myself on constructing delicious menus to suit all tastes.

How it Works

QUICK AND EASY TO BOOK

I offer a private, bespoke chef service in Aviemore and surrounding areas. Wherever you’re staying, and whatever the occasion, we start the process with an email and then quick chat on the phone. This is when I can get an idea of your group, your likes and dislikes, what kind of catering your would like and a general overview of your food compass.

 

After this call I’ll email you a menu proposal and price. I’m always happy to tweak and change menu’s based on your feedback, and once you’re happy with it I will ask for a deposit to secure the dates. Then you can sit back and relax! I’ll do all the shopping and preparation, and will arrive at your house to serve and arrange the finishing touches to your meal.
